Montana’s Native Americans Deserve Better

American Indians are a vital part of Montana’s history, culture, and economy. When I travel to Native American communities and speak to community members, leaders talk about missing out on opportunities available across the state but which never come to Native lands. As a result, tribes have seen generations of Native Americans who are stuck in a cycle of poverty. Opportunities for commerce on reservations are limited. Treaties have been broken and promises have not been kept. To effect real change here, Tribal sovereignty must be respected and the Native American voice must be heard and part of all levels of policy making. Unlike Matt Rosendale, who opposed the appointment of Deb Haaland to be Secretary of the Interior, in Congress I will be an advocate for Native Americans.
